VAT 2020: Approved & Proposed VAT rate changes

VAT 2020 – International VAT is regularly changing, take a look at some of the VAT rate changes for the new year that may impact you and your business.

Approved VAT rate changes

Hungary

From January 1, 2020 Hungary will reduce the VAT rate for accommodation services for hotels, B&B and house sharing from 18% to 5%.

Slovenia

From January 1, 2020 Slovenia will reduce the VAT rate for E-books and electronic journals from 22% to 9.5%.

Poland

From April 1, 2020 Poland will reduce the VAT for the below from 8% to 5%.

  • Soups and broths
  • Breads and cakes
  • Fruit
  • Homogenized and Dietetic foods.
  • Hygiene products.
  • Food for infants and toddlers, pacifiers, nappies and car seats.

From this date Poland will also be increasing the VAT rate for the following

  • Specific processed spices, some unprocessed spices, mustard and sweet pepper from 5% to 8%.
  • Lobsters and octopus, other crustaceans, molluscs and aquatic invertebrates like crabs and products made from them, as well as caviar and dishes sold in catering establishments, which include the products mentioned above from 5% or 8% to 23%.
  • The VAT rate for ice used for food and other refrigeration purposes will also increase to 23%.

Czech Republic

From May 1, 2020 the VAT rate for the below will decrease from 15% or 21% to 10%.

  • Supply of e-books and audiobooks
  • Water and sewer charges
  • Catering services including serving draught beer
  • Repairs of bicycles
  • Hairdressing and barber services
  • Adjustments and repairs of clothing
  • Footwear
  • Textile products

Proposed VAT rate changes

Greece

There is a proposed change to Greece’s standard rate to be reduced from 24% to 22%. There is also a proposal for VAT rates on goods and services, including hotel accommodation services, to be reduced from 13% to 11%.

Lithuania

There is a proposed change to Lithuania’s standard to rate to be reduced from 21% to 18%.

Romania

There is a proposed change to Romania’s standard rate to be reduced from 19% to 16% and for the reduced rate to be reduced from 9% to 5%.

Germany

There is a proposed change for the rates on the below to be reduced from 19% to 7%

  • Train journeys
